More than just a fire prevention program, Boots n’ Bunkers has been a main stay in public schools from Brigham City to Provo for the past 15 years. Originally founded by two firemen from Ogden City, the program is still supported by firefighters from the area going beyond their regular duties to educate Utah’s youth about fire safety and prevention. |
| Each year, the Ogden City Fire Department puts on nearly 50 programs at different elementary schools throughout Northern Utah in hopes of protecting children from fire accidents and injuries. The firemen themselves donate time and travel expenses while all of the money received by the organization goes straight to the kids. | |
| Nearly three years ago, Boots n’ Bunkers joined forces with the James F. Robinette Fire Prevention Fund and formed an assisted funding partnership. This fund along with the American Dream Foundation have provided the means necessary to furnish children with coloring books, rulers and other learning tools to help in their fire prevention education. | ![]() |
In
addition to discussing fire safety, the program covers topics ranging
from water safety and gun safety to proper use of fireworks and the buddy
system. This year, the Boots n’ Bunkers program joined forces with
the forest service in hopes of teaching children about campfire safety.
Smokey the Bear has accompanied Boots n’ Bunkers to local elementary
schools with an additional, fun-filled message. “The kids really seem to like the program,” said Daniel Glenn of Boots n’ Bunkers. “We try to provide them with a positive, fun way of learning and hope that they can retain the messages that we are trying to get across.” This past year, Boots n’ Bunkers were given a 7’x16’ enclosed trailer and the use of a 2004 F350 to help with their travel. ADF hopes to continue to provide the means to help keep this program alive in schools around the state. |
